What we do
The lodge aims to promote personal growth and to improve the lives of others. We take responsibility for the well-being of our brothers, our families and the community as a whole. We hold charitable and educational events through the year, as well as social occasions. Some events are for members only, but many include our families.
Simon de Montfort, 1206 to 1265
Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, was born in France about 1206 and came to England as a young man to claim the Earldom of Leicester. He rose in the favour of Henry III and married the King's sister, Eleanor. The two later fell out, and in 1264 Simon, supported by other nobles and the Church, defeated the King's forces at the Battle of Lewes, on 12 May 1264.
He then formed the first Parliament in which commoners took part in the government of the country. He was killed at Evesham in 1265, and is remembered as the Father of Parliament.
How the lodge began
The lodge was founded by W.Bro. Jack Slaughter PPrJGW, its Founding Charter Master. He had been a founder member of Kymer Lodge No. 8521 in Hassocks. When that lodge moved in 1980 it left a gap for members living in Hassocks and the surrounding area, and he set out to form a new one.
He chose the name from the Battle of Lewes and the part the de Montfort family played in English history. When the founders' meeting place at Ockley Lodge in Hassocks closed suddenly, they found a new home at the Lewes Temple, which stands on part of the West Gate of Lewes, where Henry III was defeated in 1264. The lodge has met there ever since.
